Satellite Image Calibration Improves the Accuracy of Jakarta’s Settlement Data

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) found that 211 RWs, or approximately 7.68 percent of Jakarta’s areas, fall into the slum category following data calibration using satellite imagery and ground verification.

This figure represents an increase from the initial survey result of 208 RWs, after 23 additional RTs were identified as meeting the slum indicators. The majority of these areas fall into the “very mild slum” category, and no areas were classified as “severe slums.” The highest concentration of slum areas located in West Jakarta, followed by North Jakarta and East Jakarta, while more than 2,500 other RWs have been verified as non-slum areas.

Data updates were conducted through a combination of field verification and satellite image-based spatial analysis to detect building density, irregular settlement patterns, and environmental conditions. Of the total 2,749 RWs in Jakarta, the initial verification phase focused on 845 RWs requiring further inspection. BPS has also developed a digital dashboard for monitoring neighbourhoods down to the RT and RW levels, utilizing 11 indicators that determine slum status to support more targeted interventions.

Additionally, BPS and the Jakarta Provincial Government discussed strengthening environmental statistics, particularly the measurement of Green Open Spaces (RTH) through the use of satellite imagery and spatial analysis to produce more accurate data and support Jakarta’s sustainable development. The discussion between the Chief Statistician of BPS RI, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti; the Vice Chief Statistician of BPS RI, Sonny Harry Budiutomo Harmadi; and the Governor of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta, Pramono Anung Wibowo took place during a meeting on May 6, 2026.
